What to Expect at a Contact Lens Exam

Contact lenses are a great option for people with vision disorders. Contact lenses can easily be placed over the eye and instantly fix people's vision problems, without the need for eyeglasses! However, before you get started wearing contacts, it's important to get the help of a family eye care doctor to help determine the proper prescription for your contact lenses.

At Master Eye Associates in Houston, TX, our eye doctor Dr. Olga Kotlyar and the rest of the staff are here to help you and your loved ones with eye care and preventative care! Find the best optometry care, including contact lens exams and annual eye exams, with our clinic today.

How Do Contact Lenses Work?

Contact lenses are small lenses that fit directly over the eye. They can help treat a variety of vision disorders caused by refractive errors. These disorders are caused by a misshapen cornea or lens that is unable to process light and filter it properly to the retina.

Contact lenses can help treat vision disorders including:

  • Astigmatism, which is a misshapen cornea
  • Myopia, or nearsightedness
  • Hyoperia, or farsightedness
  • Presbyopia, farsightedness caused by aging

Do I Need a Contact Lens Exam?

Our eye doctor will need to conduct a contact lens exam in order to determine what prescription you'll need for your contact lenses to work.

During a contact lens exam, they will examine your vision using vision tests and refraction testing, to determine which prescription works best for you.

Our eye doctor will also determine if you need specialty contact lenses for your vision. Our optometrist might say you need these specialty lenses if:

  • You have a growth over the eye
  • You have dry eyes and traditional contacts are uncomfortable
  • Your pupils are spaced differently

Determining the Best Contact Lenses Using Our Eye Doctor

Your eye doctor will get you the best contact lenses for your specific vision needs, or they might recommend eyeglasses for younger children.

Your optometrist will recommend a variety of contact lenses, including:

  • Scleral lenses, which fit directly over the eye
  • Soft lenses, which are comfortable enough for first-time users to wear
  • Gas permeable lenses, or GP lenses, to allow oxygen to enter the eye and help with dry eyes
  • Hybrid lenses to combine the sharpness of rigid lenses with soft lenses
